Reading books about Ojochal and the area suggests the place is remote, hardly visited by tourists etc...; but then, I find current websites of plans (if not already executed) of developments or "communities" ala American style. I don't see this place nothing more like Florida, eventually. I guess it is too late to make the are national park, before it ends up parking lot with houses competing for an ocean view.

Im afraid so! I bought a piece of land 7 years ago... Now it's starting to look like Mallorca. Drugs are a problem already among young ticos.

I'm afraid it is Ticos and aliens. I don't know who brought it into the area but there is certainly an increase of drugs. I also hear more about crime but luckily I haven't experienced it.

So what's the reason of moving or buying a property there? Lots of folks complain about a land developing company chopping down woods "environmentally friendly way" (whatever that supposed to mean), which changed the place entirely.

have you guys actually spent any time in the ojochal area? no place on earth is perfect, but this area is wonderful. the feedback i get on our area from those that rent my house is incredible. http://www.homeawayconnect.com/guestbook.cfm?pid=184627&culturename=en-USi am down four times a year simply because of other obligations preventing more time. these posts make it sound like it has been destroyed. far from it. the flora and fauna are incredible. not to mention the expatriates that i have met down there all come from different walks of like and bring the best with them as a general rule, not the worst. please come spend some time down here before having such negative thoughts. the "costa ballena" is a wonderful place. jay

Jay, I could not agree more. Ojochal is a wonderful place. No where is perfect. It has it draw backs but the positives outweigh the negatives by far. The expat community here is one of the most diverse in Costa Rica, adding to the charm of the area. I would not want to be anywhere else.

Ojochal is still a wonderful quit and peaceful place to stay for a shorter or longer time. Yes, also in Ojochal there are thieves, if you let your door open they will enter and take away your stuff. But I live here now for 5 years and never had any problem. Otto

I lived in Ojochal for 10 years and live in the surrounding areas the last 5 years, and I can not be so glad I leave 5 years ago, the place has change 400% of what it use to be 15 years ago. It lost all its charm.

I completely disagree, It is true that things have changed in Ojochal in the last 15 years and thank gog for that. You used to have to cross rivers with your car to get there. Mind you, change does not always come withought mishaps, but all in all, Ojochal is still quite charming and a great place to spend your vacation or live there.
